Stilnovo

Italian lighting manufacturer, founded 1946

Stilnovo was founded in 1946 by Bruno Gatta in Lainate, on the edge of Milan. Its postwar lamps followed a rationalist line in which function set the form, and Gaetano Sciolari worked as an in-house designer in these years. Many pendants and ceiling lights from the period combine brass, lacquered metal and opaline glass.

From the mid-1960s, Bruno Gatta’s son Dino opened the company to outside designers, among them Joe Colombo, Cini Boeri and Ettore Sottsass. In 1972, Stilnovo lamps were included in Italy: The New Domestic Landscape at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
